TRAVEL/DESIGN/COMMENT: CORNWALL

Great Western Trains have upped First Class – new carriages – gone are the days of nice lunches on the Paddington route to Cornwall, our destination St. Austell, a small Victorian station being brutally modernised.

Useless – press information, get message ‘Please wait’ repeated every two minutes, no answer for 45 minutes.
I waited for my hire car in the nastiest of cafes, gyrating round derelicts, no less than six, clutching vodka bottles.

Deep fog had greeted our arrival but luckily the next morning St. Mawes revealed itself in all its prettiness and the Cornish skies with clouds and bursts of sunshine were as I had remembered.
An enchanting place.
