Patrizia Medail
is a 'genre' painter, 'assemblagiste' in the tradition of surrealist art - her work is astonishing. Here are examples in her Bologna house.
Forresteria di Villa Valmarana ai Nani, Vicenza
Frescoes by Tiepolo [1727-1804]

...theatrical with music - a waltz - most inappropriate!
Basilica Palladiana, Vicenza
I love the Tiepolos.
ReplyDeleteWhen he built the basilica, Palladio made minor adjustments to each bay to align the existing asymmetrical Gothic openings with his own. It's eye-deceiving and hugely skillful, like a tailored suit. You can get a rough idea of the extent of it from a measured plan http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/52/Basilica_Palladiana_rilievo_DAgaro_1968.jpg. Compare the basilica's marble loggia to the the Palazzo dei Diamanti's asymmetrical facades - the one on the right is really only held together by the diamond pattern, because the bay rhythm is hopeless - and you've got two almost opposite (but equally successful) approaches to design.
